There are also more options than many people realize. Post-and-rail fencing can be built with different woods, rail shapes, rail lengths, and two or three-rail configurations. Stains and sealants can also be added. Discreet wire mesh can also be added when a more secure boundary is needed.

One of the things we love most about natural wood post-and-rail fencing is how well it fits the character of homes throughout Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.

We have so many beautiful Colonials, Capes, farmhouses and traditional New England-style homes throughout towns like Medfield, Dover, Westwood, Walpole, Needham and the surrounding MetroWest communities. Farther north, the same classic style works beautifully on larger properties throughout the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire.

A natural wood fence tends to blend into the landscape rather than becoming the first thing you notice about the property.

From a distance, you primarily see the natural wood rails and the landscape beyond them.

Rustic hardwood is one of the most traditional post-and-rail styles and feels right at home on classic New England properties. The naturally shaped rails give each section a little character, creating a fence that feels established and organic rather than perfectly manufactured.

We especially love this style alongside older farmhouses, classic colonials, wooded lots, stone walls and more natural landscapes. It defines the property beautifully without becoming the first thing you notice about it. It takes many many years of New England weather for the fence to mature like the one pictured above, but at Northstar, we appreciate the character and charm of this timeless fence.

Western Red Cedar

Western red cedar offers the warmth and character of natural wood with a cleaner, more refined appearance. Its rich natural color works beautifully with both traditional and newer New England homes, giving homeowners a classic post-and-rail look that feels polished without feeling formal.

It’s a great choice for someone who loves natural wood but wants something a little more tailored than a rustic hardwood fence.

Round Cedar — Duxbury Style

Round cedar has a softer, more traditional country feel, with rounded posts and rails that create a relaxed, timeless look. It works especially well across larger lawns and longer fence lines, where the repeating round rails become a beautiful part of the landscape.

We especially like this style on classic Cape Cod style homes, rural properties, wooded lots and homes surrounded by mature New England landscaping.

Paddle Cedar Rail

Paddle cedar offers a more substantial take on traditional cedar post-and-rail fencing. Its distinctive rail profile adds a little more character and visual weight while still maintaining the open, natural feel homeowners love about this style of fence.

It’s a beautiful option for larger properties, long driveways and landscapes where you want the fence to feel intentional and noticeable without closing off the view.

Square Cedar — Boston Style

Square cedar gives traditional post-and-rail fencing a cleaner, more architectural look. The straight lines and squared profile feel a little more tailored than rustic or rounded rails while still bringing the warmth and character of natural wood to the property. It works especially well with most homes, including newer construction and more formal landscaping where homeowners want an open fence with a crisp, finished appearance.
